What on Earth is a “Do Not” list? On this #TrashItThursday, I am going to give you my top three Do Not’s for a successful business. They involve throwing away some preconceived notions and as you begin to implement these three strategies into your daily routine, you will start to see how much easier it will be to run the everyday tasks of your business.
The first Do Not that I want to talk about is the fear that people have in recommending their competition to customers. Do Not be afraid to recommend the competition. If you try and force a “fit” of what you have to offer to a customer, eventually they will become annoyed and may not come back to you again or, they will take what you are offering just to end the awkwardness and you will either wind up with a return or they will talk to people and let them know that you do not know what you are doing and that you made them pay for something they did not want. Avoid this potential disaster by simply recommending your competition when you do not have what the customer wants. They will appreciate your honesty and will more than likely remember you next time they need something. Also, they may respect what you did and refer you to other people. It is a win win situation instead of a total loss.
My second Do Not is that you should not underestimate the things you should not be doing. For instance, you need to make a bank deposit but you decide that you would rather go shopping and make the deposit in the morning. You know darn well that shopping does not take precedence over making your daily business deposit. You are taking a risk of either losing the money, having it stolen or having your bank account overdrawn. You know you should not be so lackadaisical with your responsibility so do not underestimate the importance of knowing what you should not be doing. In other words, you should know right from wrong so treat your life and business with the respect it deserves and always remember that which you know you should not do.
My third Do Not is, do not lay all your cards on the table. Do not give all you have before anyone else has even spoken. Or as I like to explain it, do not get diarrhea of the mouth. For instance, too many people will walk into a meeting, lay their entire plan out, talk about their future outlook on their project, talk about the money involved or even tell the room their entire life story before anyone else has even had the opportunity to say or to ask anything. You have to learn to listen rather than to speak. When you speak you are stating that which you already know. When you listen, you begin to learn and develop new ideas. Also, when you show all your cards so to speak, it leaves you no negotiating room because you have given everyone in the room the upper hand on you. So, remember that a little mystery will make you that much more appealing.
I hope you always keep in mind that all the ideas and tools I give to you, I give to you as pieces to work in conjunction with everything that I try to teach you. If you practice with my ideas and implement them into building and growing your business, I promise it will help you reach the level of success you are looking for.
A major learning avenue that I am always trying to instill in you is to read and at the very least, try to read a book a week. Today I would like to suggest The Will Power Instinct.
