The meaning of life

I have been so busy all day that I made myself a little sick. I came home in time to eat dinner with my son and I have been in bed since. I had said to myself earlier in the day that I just did not have it in me today to do a blog post for #MammothMonday but as I lay here and watch the time close in on 11:00pm I realize that I want to say something.

I read something today that seemed very fitting for today. I read, in part, that Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life. Aristotle was the one making this statement and for whatever reason, I read it over and over again. He said that it was the whole aim and that it was the end of human existence. What does that mean?

Happiness is very individual and no one person can tell another person how, when or why to be happy and I think that is, in my humble opinion and my personal interpretation, what is meant by the “end of human existence”. I think Aristotle may have had another meaning but to me it means that too many people and maybe even a majority of people NEVER take their own happiness into consideration. Instead, everyone is so worried about being liked and appearing as they think they need to be seen and too many people are conforming to other peoples ideals that I think they slowly die inside of sadness and misery that they cease to exist.

Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life. Think about it. Again, this is my opinion but we are not put on this Earth to be miserable and yet we rarely do things to ensure our own happiness. I am not trying to get into the meaning of life but I feel that my work is exactly what Aristotle is talking about. I made a conscious decision years ago that I did not want to be miserable working for someone else. I have no idea how or why but I knew I would be happy building my own dream. Please do not misunderstand me because there have been miserable times but even during those times that I cried myself to sleep or the times when I was not sure how I was going to pay a bill or even when I was not sure where I was going to live, I knew that I was doing what was making me happy. I knew that I needed to be happy and I knew without ever having had read this Aristotle quote that happiness is the meaning and the purpose of my life. I knew this in my heart then and I know it know. I think I am the minority in that anyone who tries to find their own happiness in life is seen as selfish and self centered and the shame is that people buy into this terrible notion.

For years now I have counseled people on building or growing their own businesses. I have counseled people on financial freedom and each time I have done that, everyone has left feeling excited and re-energized. I have received amazing feedback directly and indirectly through referrals. The reason people left feeling so good after sitting with me was because they could feel my energy and my enthusiasm. You see, when you love what you do and you do what you love, it reflects outwardly and it becomes palpable to those around you.

The point of this blog post is simple, find your happiness. Life is too short to live in other peoples misery when you can be living the life you were born to live. It does not have to be by growing a multi million dollar business, it can be by having your own business that brings in just enough money to make all your bills. Happiness is not about quantity but it is about quality.

For today’s reading pick, Living Gratitude is a book I would like you to read. It is not about business but it is about realizing the importance of gratitude which will have a trickle down effect on everything else in your life.
