Seventeen Inches

Today, on this #WisdomWednesday, I am going to share the following story which was not written by me, rather it was posted on Facebook by Brock Moore and I just had to share it with all of you because when you put it into context for your own life, it is very poignant and it really should strike a nerve with everyone.

Before you decide to leave me a comment about me not being able to understand, take note that I am a self made entrepreneurial woman. That point alone should tell you that I understand. My next point is that for almost 15 years now, I am the mom to a special needs son. I know first hand how important it is to not change the seventeen inches (you have to read on to understand the reference).

The following is from Brock Moore::

I promised myself years ago, every time I saw this I would re-post. Happens about twice a year. Rings true EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.... Here goes!!!

Most people won't take the time to read this all the way to the end. I hope that you will. 17 INCHES" - you will not regret reading this

An excellent article to read from beginning to end.

Twenty years ago, in Nashville, Tennessee, during the first week of January, 1996, more than 4,000 baseball coaches descended upon the Opryland Hotel for the 52nd annual ABCA's convention.

While I waited in line to register with the hotel staff, I heard other more veteran coaches rumbling about the lineup of speakers scheduled to present during the weekend. One name kept resurfacing, always with the same sentiment — “John Scolinos is here? Oh, man, worth every penny of my airfare.”

Who is John Scolinos, I wondered. No matter; I was just happy to be there.

In 1996, Coach Scolinos was 78 years old and five years retired from a college coaching career that began in 1948. He shuffled to the stage to an impressive standing ovation, wearing dark polyester pants, a light blue shirt, and a string around his neck from which home plate hung — a full-sized, stark-white home plate.

Seriously, I wondered, who is this guy?

After speaking for twenty-five minutes, not once mentioning the prop hanging around his neck, Coach Scolinos appeared to notice the snickering among some of the coaches. Even those who knew Coach Scolinos had to wonder exactly where he was going with this, or if he had simply forgotten about home plate since he’d gotten on stage. Then, finally …

“You’re probably all wondering why I’m wearing home plate around my neck,” he said, his voice growing irascible. I laughed along with the others, acknowledging the possibility. “I may be old, but I’m not crazy. The reason I stand before you today is to share with you baseball people what I’ve learned in my life, what I’ve learned about home plate in my 78 years.”

Several hands went up when Scolinos asked how many Little League coaches were in the room. “Do you know how wide home plate is in Little League?”

After a pause, someone offered, “Seventeen inches?”, more of a question than answer.

“That’s right,” he said. “How about in Babe Ruth’s day? Any Babe Ruth coaches in the house?” Another long pause.

“Seventeen inches?” a guess from another reluctant coach.

“That’s right,” said Scolinos. “Now, how many high school coaches do we have in the room?” Hundreds of hands shot up, as the pattern began to appear. “How wide is home plate in high school baseball?”

“Seventeen inches,” they said, sounding more confident.

“You’re right!” Scolinos barked. “And you college coaches, how wide is home plate in college?”

“Seventeen inches!” we said, in unison.

“Any Minor League coaches here? How wide is home plate in pro ball?”............“Seventeen inches!”

“RIGHT! And in the Major Leagues, how wide home plate is in the Major Leagues?

“Seventeen inches!”

“SEV-EN-TEEN INCHES!” he confirmed, his voice bellowing off the walls. “And what do they do with a Big League pitcher who can’t throw the ball over seventeen inches?” Pause. “They send him to Pocatello !” he hollered, drawing raucous laughter. “What they don’t do is this: they don’t say, ‘Ah, that’s okay, Jimmy. If you can’t hit a seventeen-inch target? We’ll make it eighteen inches or nineteen inches. We’ll make it twenty inches so you have a better chance of hitting it. If you can’t hit that, let us know so we can make it wider still, say twenty-five inches.'”

Pause. “Coaches… what do we do when your best player shows up late to practice? or when our team rules forbid facial hair and a guy shows up unshaven? What if he gets caught drinking? Do we hold him accountable? Or do we change the rules to fit him? Do we widen home plate? "

The chuckles gradually faded as four thousand coaches grew quiet, the fog lifting as the old coach’s message began to unfold. He turned the plate toward himself and, using a Sharpie, began to draw something. When he turned it toward the crowd, point up, a house was revealed, complete with a freshly drawn door and two windows. “This is the problem in our homes today. With our marriages, with the way we parent our kids. With our discipline.

We don’t teach accountability to our kids, and there is no consequence for failing to meet standards. We just widen the plate!”

Pause. Then, to the point at the top of the house he added a small American flag. “This is the problem in our schools today. The quality of our education is going downhill fast and teachers have been stripped of the tools they need to be successful, and to educate and discipline our young people. We are allowing others to widen home plate! Where is that getting us?”

Silence. He replaced the flag with a Cross. “And this is the problem in the Church, where powerful people in positions of authority have taken advantage of young children, only to have such an atrocity swept under the rug for years. Our church leaders are widening home plate for themselves! And we allow it.”

“And the same is true with our government. Our so-called representatives make rules for us that don’t apply to themselves. They take bribes from lobbyists and foreign countries. They no longer serve us. And we allow them to widen home plate! We see our country falling into a dark abyss while we just watch.”

I was amazed. At a baseball convention where I expected to learn something about curve balls and bunting and how to run better practices, I had learned something far more valuable.

From an old man with home plate strung around his neck, I had learned something about life, about myself, about my own weaknesses and about my responsibilities as a leader. I had to hold myself and others accountable to that which I knew to be right, lest our families, our faith, and our society continue down an undesirable path.

“If I am lucky,” Coach Scolinos concluded, “you will remember one thing from this old coach today. It is this: "If we fail to hold ourselves to a higher standard, a standard of what we know to be right; if we fail to hold our spouses and our children to the same standards, if we are unwilling or unable to provide a consequence when they do not meet the standard; and if our schools & churches & our government fail to hold themselves accountable to those they serve, there is but one thing to look forward to …”

With that, he held home plate in front of his chest, turned it around, and revealed its dark black backside, “…We have dark days ahead!.”

Note: Coach Scolinos died in 2009 at the age of 91, but not before touching the lives of hundreds of players and coaches, including mine. Meeting him at my first ABCA convention kept me returning year after year, looking for similar wisdom and inspiration from other coaches. He is the best clinic speaker the ABCA has ever known because he was so much more than a baseball coach. His message was clear: “Coaches, keep your players—no matter how good they are—your own children, your churches, your government, and most of all, keep yourself at seventeen inches."

And this my friends is what our country has become and what is wrong with it today, and now go out there and fix it!

"Don't widen the plate."

That is it. Now you have to admit that was a great piece to read. We have to crush life or at the very least, we have to know that we did everything in our power to be the best we can be. So, this week I am going to suggest a great book that I have recommended in previous blog post and that book is Crushing It. Please, if you have not read this book yet go get it from your local library or borrow it. If those are not options for you, here is a link to get it on Amazon>> https://amzn.to/2OHJCFg

With Verbal Intension

Hi. Is everyone in chatter box mode? Well, it is #TalkingTuesday so it is the one day per week I ask you to take a deep breath, grab a beverage and talk to whomever you can engage happily and make sure engage all day long. Talking Tuesday is great practice for gaining new clients, new ideas, new information and possibly new friendships, so get out there and start talking.

One of the most important reasons for drumming up conversations at the very least, once per week, is the simple fact that it brings us back to human contact and human interaction. The only interactions that we are currently getting is with our fingers. We avoid phone calls like the plague thanks to modern technology and the digital age. And even worse, face to face conversations are almost unheard of. It is a horrible thought but if we do not take the time to have actual face to face conversations with people, we are going to lose our ability to ever know how to properly converse.

Interpersonal skills are a main function of life because it helps to develop your intelligence. You cannot build yourself up internally if you cannot muster up the courage to hold actual conversations with other humans and yes, it does take a sense of courage to start a conversation especially if you do not know the individual. Talking is literally and figuratively an exercise that strengthens the brain in many ways and as the old saying goes, if you do not use it, you lose it.

When you continually converse with people via email or texting, you lose the ability to hear their inflections and as a direct result, you cause undo stress to yourself because you are constantly trying to figure out someone’s intentions. Reading rather than speaking can cause so much confusion because you are not sure of the actual intention in that text or email that you will have prolonged going back and forth trying to ensure you understood what was actually being said. On the flip side, you may read a text or an email one way when the fact is that the sender meant it a totally different way and now you have wasted lots of time and energy and possibly have insulted someone because you did not do what was asked.

My point to my Lori’s Loop community is simply, get out there and if only for one day a week, spend the day talking. You will definitely sharpen all your skills and you will guarantee your own success by being that much more honed in than your peers.

Here is a book that I have recommended to you in the past. It is called How To Win Friends and Influence People and it is a great book to help you on this continuous learning journey. Again I encourage you to borrow a copy from your local library or from a friend. You will not regret it. If either option is not available to you, then here is a link so that you can get a copy from Amazon>> https://amzn.to/2niAFaq

Risk and Reward

Happy #MammothMonday to all. Today’s blog post is going to discuss taking risk because, when risk is involved, it could have a huge impact on your life and or your business. Many people shy away from risk because there is always the possibility of failing at your goal or even losing money, money that is already tight before the risk is even taken. Although there are hundreds if not thousands of risks that you can take, here are three specific risks that I consider to be benefits rather than negatives that I want to tell you about because I feel they encompass the most important factors of risk.

The first benefit that involves taking risk is the ability to have unforeseen opportunities come your way. When you are willing to put yourself out in a vulnerable position that involves risk, you can potentially gain the respect of peers and thereby possibly gain new clients and or partnerships that will help you to build and grow your business. Unforeseen opportunities can also come in learning more about your field of interest or you may gain more insight into your journeys end, possibly helping you reach that end much earlier than expected.

A second benefit of taking risks that I would like to discuss is the fact that taking risks can help you to develop a sense of accomplishment. Risk taking although scary and not meant to be done frivolously can really boost your self confidence when you actually make the risk work in your favor. Taking risks also helps you to overcome your fear of failure because if by chance the risk does not work out, it just embeds in you the fact that a risk not paying off does not derail you, it just aims you at a new path with new information and a greater chance of success the next time around.

Finally, my favorite part of risk taking is that it actively helps you to pursue success. We all put these self generated limits on what we can accomplish and therefore we stay in a ridiculously safe zone which will almost never propel us forward. As you venture into the unknown and you actually achieve that step that was so scary, you take a huge leap toward success.

So, even though the word risk, in and of itself, basically screams at you, “you can either win or lose”, it is important to take risks and I do not mean gambling on every part of your business. I simply mean, take well calculated risks and the only way to know which are well calculated is by practicing. Start out small so you do not destroy that which you already created but analyze what is in front of you and it should make the risk taking that much easier. Notice I said easier because it will still be scary but if you want to continue to grow and prosper, risk is a necessary element.

If you want my choice for your next read, I chose to have you read, Identifying and Managing Project Risk, so that you can try and decipher which type of risk you should try to utilize and also gain some new insight on the subject. If your library does not have the book, here is a link for you to get your own copy which is available on Amazon>> https://amzn.to/2NZu5QD

IRS Tax Changes for 2020

On this #FundMeFriday, I want to cover some important IRS tax changes for 2020 that are just a few weeks away from being implemented. With only a few weeks left in 2019, it is an important time period to start adjusting your finances as needed and I picked out a few important changes that will have an effect and that will be of interest to most people. Before I get into them, I am going to ask that standard Friday question and that question is, did you pay yourself today? You are going to get sick of me asking you this question but my hope is that if I mention it enough times, it will sink in and you will begin to pay yourself every week before you pay anything else. It is all about growing your savings so please make sure you pay yourself first.

One of the main changes that is of interest to most people is the change to the standard deduction. If you are single or married filing separately, your standard deduction rises to $12,400.00. If you are married filing a joint tax return, your standard deduction increases to $24,800.00. Finally, if you are head of household, your standard deduction rises to $18,650.00. This deduction is important because it reduces your taxable income and with all the tax changes that were made, many people cannot itemize their income tax returns anymore so this number will play a major role in your budget computations.

This next line item was something that people were hoping would come back but according to the IRS, the personal exemption which was a provision of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, I am sorry to say stays at 0.00 for tax year 2020 as it was in 2019. Sorry folks but you cannot look forward to this deduction and it looks like you may have to get used to this deduction missing in the forseeable future.

Now I personally have a chunk of client’s who look forward to this next line item and that is the Earned Income Credit. The credit has changed as follows, the maximum amount allowed in 2020 has increased to $6,660.00 for qualifying taxpayers who have three or more qualifying children.

Finally, many people ask about the annual exclusion for gifts. This gift is a way to transfer money without having any tax issues provided you follow the mandated exclusion. As for 2020, the annual exclusion for gifts remains the same as 2019 and that amount is $15,000.00. Therefore, I encourage all who are going to take advantage of this exclusion to make sure that you any individual that you gift money to does not exceed $15,000.00 in the tax year.

I hope that this information is useful and as always, if you have any further questions or comments on this matter, please feel free to contact me via email or just leave a comment and I will try and answer any question that you may have.

Today I have a great choice for your reading enjoyment. The book is called The Total Money Makeover which is a New York Times bestseller. Once you read this book, you will be able to take control of your finances. Go borrow a copy from your local library or from a friend as soon as you can. If neither option is available to you, I am attaching a link so that you can get it from Amazon. The link is>> https://amzn.to/3771uQO

Yes That Is Trash

In keeping up with our weekly to do schedule, on this #TrashItThursday, I have three things that I would like you to rid from your life or at the very minimal, at least start working on changing these things.

The first thing I would like you to rid from your life is the constant unrealistic expectations you have of yourself. This has nothing to do with dreaming big, this is about you not recognizing what the truth actually is in what your expectation may entail. Having these expectations of yourself can cause severe anxiousness and an inability to get anything accomplished at all. This happens because, we tend to do things that others others expect us to do rather than doing what we want to do and doing what is right for us and our situation. Stop trying to live up to what others want and start working on just being you.

The next thing to rid your life of is that over packed schedule that you keep creating. If you keep over scheduling yourself, you will wear yourself down and therefore be useless to your business and to your life. Learn to distinguish between what is important and that which can be delegated to someone else. If you try to be everything to everyone, you will surely be setting yourself up for failure.

This last item I want you to rid your life of is fear of the unknown. Everyone seems to be afraid of taking the next step or they are afraid of trying something new because they are afraid of the unknown. They are afraid of what awaits them at the end of whatever journey they may be embarking on and yet they have no idea what that actual fear is but they allow that fear to set in and they allow that fear to steer their life. You have to stop worrying about what could possibly be out there to tear you down and just take those leaps of faith in hopes that all that you want is waiting for you down that path. The worst thing that could be in that “unknown” is a big fat NO from someone or for something that you wanted and as I have stated in previous blog posts, that NO you are worried about and fearing just means Next Opportunity. So, stop worrying about the invisible boogey man and just keep walking toward your dream, one step at a time.

I am once again going to tell you that there is no better way to get ahead in life than to continuously keep learning whether you watch YouTube videos, listen to podcasts or audio books or, whether you just pick up a book and just start reading. The following book is a book that I have suggested to you before and I am going to suggest it again because I feel it is a great starting point and a great motivational book. It is called Crushing It. Go visit your library and check it out. If that is not an option, here is a link to the book to get it from Amazon>> https://amzn.to/2OHJCFg

The Resistance

I started writing these blog posts to help my client’s and to hopefully help new business relations to form healthy and long lasting businesses. They are also meant to boost confidence where needed and to be a figurative extended hand to let you know that you are not alone. Todays blog post was supposed to be solely about fighting against resistance while maintaining wisdom but truth be told, it is turning into one of the hardest post I have written. It is not hard because of the topic, it is hard because today is one of those days that I am fighting massive toxic and negative forces that are coming at me in ways that I feel as though my heart is going to rip through my chest.

So, I have taken a deep breath and rather than just turn my back away from my blog today, I am going to sit here and soldier on because that is what you do in real life if you are not a quitter. The choices here are that you can either cry it out, scream it out or go run it out but then you have to shrug it off and get on with life. I am not going to sit here and type that once I took that deep breath and collected my thoughts that everything magically went back to normal because I would be lying to you and doing you a disservice. What I am actually doing is that I am sitting here typing this blog with just a small desk lamp, no radio and no television, all alone, while fighting back tears from the stresses of the day, I am here typing while feeling that any minute I may need to vomit from the tightness in my stomach and I am sitting here typing knowing that I too, amongst all of you, am here to continue to grow and hopefully help my business thrive. That is what is supposed to happen in real life and todays blog post, which I chose last night, is extremely fitting for the day that I am having and it just happens to be fighting against resistance. There is that amazing saying that is used throughout many organizations and throughout many forms of therapy and the saying says something like this, God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can and the wisdom to know the difference. I do not know who actually came out with this saying or prayer but it is genius and I will incorporate it into todays blog post.

Accepting what you cannot change is a resistance that will take massive inner strength. There is not a person alive who does not want to change something in their own life and yet they must accept the fact that they cannot change it. It literally means that you have to put your own want and or desire on the back burner for the sake of something or someone else. This may just be one of the hardest things you will do in life and in business. You must resist against the urge and believe deeply that whatever comes of your acceptance of the situation, it will eventually be for the good and for the good of you personally or for you professionally.

Then there is having the courage to change the things that you can. Just because you have the ability to change a situation does not mean that the change is easy by any means. There are situations that life will throw at you that you know for a fact you can indeed change but the courage that you will need to make that change may not even exist in you yet. The resistance will try and win over you at every corner, yet you must fight on and eventually you will dig deep enough to find that courage and make that change that is necessary for your own personal sanity or for the health and growth of your business. Resistance will always play a roll here because when you are changing something that requires courage, you are changing things that people and or forces around you do not want changed which is why it will take that said courage.

So, how do you know what to accept and what to change? Well, the answer on this #WisdomWednesday is in fact, wisdom. Sometimes you may know something is right but you must resist against it because in order for you to thrive in life, you must make the change. Other times you know that in order to get that peace and serenity, you just have to accept a situation. But how do you choose? That answer to this question can only come from inside of you. What are you willing to put up with? If you are going to accept something, you need to ask yourself why you are accepting it? You have to accept it because it brings serenity into your life and not because you just do not want to deal with the problem anymore. When you decide a change is needed, change because it will make your life better and bring you toward your dream. Do not change because you are giving up. In each of these scenarios it boils down to one common denominator, you and your ability to place yourself first.

You have one life to live and one life only. There is no reason whatsoever to have toxicity or negativity in your life. There are about seven billion people in this world. If you are not happy with the people around you or with the clientele you have, change that scenery. I too am so guilty of allowing myself to be drained by toxic and negative people. Life is too short, surround yourself with people who make you smile and with things that bring joy into your life. Surround yourself with clientele that appreciate the value you bring into their world. You must surround yourself with positivity and the first step is having that wisdom to know the difference. I think we all have that wisdom, we just need the courage to fight against the resistance.

In keeping real with my friends who appreciate what I bring to them through Loris Loop, I am not going to delete this post because it is very important that while I help you to create and grow your businesses, I do not sugar coat the fact that every successful business only has rainbows and unicorns and this entrepreneurial mom will continue to be stressed BUT, as I continue to work on my business that I love, the stress is slowly lessoning all thanks to the fact that I am doing what I love to do and not what I have to do.

Today I have an amazing book for you that will bring you amazing enlightenment. It is called The Science of Self-Empowerment and it really is cutting edge. Please see if your local library or a friend can lend it to you. I have the Amazon link if neither option is available and here it is>> https://amzn.to/2NLloJF

The Power of Brainstorming

Brainstorming, networking, gatherings or whatever word you choose to use, you need to understand that this is an integral part of starting, growing and maintaining your business. On this weeks #TalkingTuesday blog post I would like to give you a few reasons behind this long word called brainstorming that most people really just set aside without actually thinking about the main purpose behind it.

Just for explanatory purposes, brainstorming is not you sitting alone thinking about what you need to do although, it can be on a smaller level with the use of the word being slightly diminished. What brainstorming actually is, it is a technique of bringing a group of people together in order to toss around all their ideas, figuratively, on the table and into the air for all to collaborate. In other words, the more that people toss out their ideas, the greater the chance that a solution to whatever issue is on the table will be found.

Brainstorming allows for free thinking and it allows people to release any inhibitions they would otherwise have regarding their ideas and thoughts. Therefore, on this Talking Tuesday, make sure you gather with people, throw your ideas around and see what kind of feedback you get. You might even get new ideas to help with the growth of your own business.

As usual, continuous learning is the key to all successes in life so for this blog post I am going to recommend a book called Thinkertoys-A handbook of creative thinking techniques. It will give you a few new perspectives on how to creatively think and get those ideas from your head into the real world. Again, go check with your local library to see if they have a copy you can borrow. If you would like your own copy, here is an Amazon link where you can get the book>> https://amzn.to/2NEGBF0

Think Big But With small Pieces

Grappling for that 100 grand. Yes it is a fight so many people bring to me. The question that has been asked of me probably thousands of times and that question is, how can I make six figures? That elusive hundred thousand everybody seems to be searching for. So on this #MammothMonday, the answer is imagination, perseverance and math. That is right, you have to be able to open that mind up to the world, want it badly enough and, you need some simple math skills. If your mind is open now, I am going to tell you how simple it can be.

I call it grappling for 100 grand for a reason and that reason is because you will be in a constant battle with yourself. You, as a human will look to make everything so much harder than it has to be and that will be the constant battle within. Open up your mind and imagine what you want and that will be your journey point. Then, I need you to realize that you are just playing one big game of math.

So, first you have imagined that 100 grand that you want to make each year. You want to be in the six figure club but you have no idea how to get there. Well, you have to take that imagined figure and start breaking it into manageable and much smaller pieces.

This example is where many of my clients begin and it is where most of you will begin and that starting point is your 40 hour work week. So, if you take the 40 hours per week that you work then multiply that by 52 weeks in a year, you come up with 2080 hours per year that you work (40x52=2080). Now very simply divide that 2080 into 100 grand and you get $48.07 per hour (100,000 / 2080 = $48.07). Look how we just chopped that 100 grand into a much smaller and much more manageable piece.

Now at $48.07 per hour isn’t that a much more doable number? Let us continue with our math conversions. First, for the sake of simplicity, I will now refer to this figure as 48 rather than 48.07. The next question is whether or not you have a product or a service that you can charge $48 for. If you do, then you only need to sell that product or perform that service 8 times per day. What if you only charge $25? Well then, you only have to sell two per hour or 16 per day. We can chop that down even smaller. What if you have created a product or a service that you only sell for $10? That simply means that you need to sell five per hour or 40 per day.

Can you see how simple and more doable your big dream is when you break it down into much more manageable pieces? It is perfectly fine and I encourage you to dream big just remember to take that journey point and learn how to break it down.

I wanted to post this because it seems to be an obsession point with so many people wanting to know how to reach one hundred grand per year. Well, grapple no more as the simplified answer is above. Math is going to be a major player in your life so get comfortable with it. This example can also be worked in reverse. Let us say that you sell an Excel template for $8. Now you are wondering how on earth you can make one hundred thousand dollars selling an $8 template. Well, if you take 100000 and divide that by 8 you get 12500. Then divide 12500 by 52 weeks to get almost 241. So, this is the number of units you need to sell per week. If you divide that by a 5 day work week you now have about 48 units per day to get rid of. You can chop even more. Let us say that you only wanted to work 8 hours per day. Well then, divide 48 by 8 and now you only have to concentrate on selling 6 units per hour. Some days you may want to put in a 10 hour work day and some days you may not want to work at all. All you have to do is keep your small pieces in mind and always adjust according to your needs and wants as long the Big Picture stays in focus.

Do you need some ideas to build that 100 grand business. There is a great book for you to borrow from your local library or from your friend called Shopify: Build Your Own $100,000.00 Online Business. It is a great place to start if you do not have a road map in place. If neither borrowing option is available to you, here is a link to get it from Amazon>> https://amzn.to/34UDpuL
